Lesson 1: Why Most People Get Weak AI Output

The output you get from AI is almost always a reflection of the input you gave it. This lesson explains why that is true, what "weak input" looks like in practice, and how to recognize the patterns that consistently lead to generic, robotic, or useless AI output.


What this means

When people complain that AI output sounds bland, bloated, or off-target, they usually blame the tool. The tool is rarely the main problem.

The real causes are much more common and much more fixable:

  • The request was vague
  • No audience was defined
  • There was no meaningful context
  • The goal was unclear
  • The first draft was accepted too quickly

These are not AI problems. They are briefing problems. And briefing problems have briefing solutions.


Why it matters

Generic input produces generic output. This is not a flaw in AI — it is just how the system works. When you give AI a vague request, it fills the gaps with the most statistically average response. That average response is what most people experience as "AI writing."

The good news is that fixing these problems does not require learning complicated techniques. It requires being clearer about what you actually want.


What most people do wrong

1. Writing the minimum viable request

"Write a blog post about remote work."

This prompt has a topic. It has nothing else. No audience, no goal, no tone, no angle, no length, no context. AI will produce something — it always does — but it will be the most generic possible version of a blog post about remote work.

2. Copying the task name instead of the actual need

"Create an onboarding document."

What kind? For who? For which product? At what skill level? What problems does it need to solve? Without answers to these questions, the output will be a template that looks like every other onboarding document.

3. Skipping audience entirely

If you do not say who this is for, AI defaults to a kind of generic everyman — someone with average knowledge, average experience, and average needs. That person usually does not exist in your actual audience.

4. Accepting the first draft too quickly

The first output is often a reasonable starting point, not a finished product. Treating it as final means you leave most of the value on the table.

5. Treating AI like a vending machine

Put in coin. Pull lever. Collect result. If you do not like it, try a different coin. This framing produces one-shot thinking when the real value is in the back-and-forth.


What better looks like

Better AI output starts with a more complete request. Not longer — more complete.

Before you submit any request to AI, you should be able to answer:

  • What is this for?
  • Who will read or use it?
  • What outcome does it need to accomplish?
  • What tone or style should it have?
  • What should it include?
  • What should it avoid?

You do not always need to answer all six in every prompt. But knowing the answers gives you the material to build a prompt that produces something actually useful.


Weak example

Write me a blog post about customer onboarding.

What is wrong with this: No audience. No company context. No tone. No specific angle. No length. No goal. The result will be a competent, generic blog post that could have been written for any company in any industry. It will probably use phrases like "streamline your onboarding process" and "improve customer satisfaction."


Strong example

Write a 700-word blog post for a B2B SaaS company aimed at customer success managers. The topic is reducing churn during the first 30 days of customer onboarding. The tone should be direct and practical — no fluff, no hype. Assume the reader has tried basic onboarding tactics before and wants more specific, actionable ideas. Avoid generic advice like "check in frequently." Give concrete examples where possible.

What is better about this: It names the audience, the goal, the word count, the tone, what to include, and what to avoid. AI now has enough to produce something genuinely useful rather than filling in the blank spaces with averages.


Practical exercise

Find three recent AI requests you have made — or use the three weak prompts below — and rewrite each one to include at least four of the six elements: what it is for, who it is for, what outcome it needs, what tone it should have, what to include, and what to avoid.

Weak prompt 1: Write an email about the team meeting.

Weak prompt 2: Summarize this article.

Weak prompt 3: Create a job description for a marketing manager.

Write your improved versions before looking at AI output. Compare what you get with each version.


Reflection prompt

  1. Think about the last three times you were disappointed with AI output. What was missing from your original request?
  2. Have you ever gotten a surprisingly good result from AI? What did that request have that the disappointing ones did not?
  3. Do you usually define who the output is for before you write the prompt? If not, why not?
